York captain Chris Smith has capped a memorable end to the season by being named League Two player of the month for April.

Smith skippered the Minstermen to four wins and two draws from their final six matches as the club retained their Football League status.

The 31-year-old played a key role in York's successful relegation battle, including a stoppage-time goalline clearance in their last home game to ensure a 2-1 victory over Southend and scoring the game's only goal in their 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge on the final day.

The former Reading, Tamworth and Mansfield defender, who made 50 appearances for York this season, scoring four goals, signed a new one-year deal with the club earlier in the week.
