Dagenham interim manager Wayne Burnett refused to criticise his players despite their 1-0 home loss to Chesterfield on Saturday.
Abu Ogogo handed the Spireites the points and Burnett reflected on a hectic few days in charge since taking over from John Still, who switched to Luton on Monday.
Burnett said: "It's been a big step up for me but it's been great to have been given the opportunity.
"Time will tell how things work out, but I came here five years ago thinking I could potentially end up in this position.
"So far I've seen good signs, despite only picking up the one point from two games.
"I took some good advice from a number of people in the game before I did step in, and I think I am ready to do this now.
"I already knew that no games in our division are easy, but this group of players is capable of so much.
"We'll just keep going and try and win as many games as possible between now and May.
"I'm not one for setting targets, but if we get points on the board then who knows where it may take us."
