Gillingham midfielder Romain Vincelot felt the result against AFC Wimbledon was important than scoring a goal on his debut.
The French midfielder arrived from Brighton on Friday on a loan agreement until January and made an immediate impact, scoring the only goal of the game midway through the first half at Kingsmeadow.
Vincelot said he had been impressed with the spirit in the Gills camp during his short time at the club.
"A goal on my debut is of course maybe the best way to begin, but most importantly we won, so a goal plus a win - that's the perfect debut," he told Gills Player.
"A goal with a defeat would have been not a good start. We won, I scored and I'm happy with that even if it was not a great game.
"But I'm happy with what I have seen, I really like the spirit, there's a proper winning team spirit and that's good."
