Sky Sports understands that Accrington Stanley manager Paul Cook is in contention to take over at Chesterfield.
The Spireites parted company with John Sheridan in September following relegation into League Two and a winless run at the start of the season that saw Sheridan put on gardening leave.
Tommy Wright took the reins as caretaker manager following Sheridan's sacking, and oversaw Chesterfield's 4-3 win at home to Accrington in September.
Accrington have lost their last four games, with their latest defeat coming at home to York on Tuesday night.
Cook joined Accrington from Sligo Rovers in February 2012, six years after finishing his playing career with the Lancashire club.
