Chesterfield caretaker manager Tommy Wright admitted he felt sympathy for Accrington after winning 4-3 at the Proact Stadium on Tuesday.
Jack Lester scored twice in the League Two clash and Marc Richards netted a debut goal for Chesterfield, but Accrington hit back with a brace from Rommy Boco and a close-range finish from Peter Murphy before Terrell Forbes won it.
Wright said: "Accrington must be very disappointed because they played some excellent football.
"We were good going forward but we had four or five players who were not at the races. We did put pressure on their back four but they also looked like scoring when they put pressure on our back four.
"From a positive point of view, we looked like scoring when we went forward but I was disappointed with the way we we defended and they made the most of it and scored three goals."
