Manager Martin Ling described Torquay's 1-0 win at fellow promotion contenders Crawley as "pleasing" after a run of defeats recently.
Eunan O'Kane's late winner took the Gulls above their West Sussex rivals and gave them their eighth success in 10 games.
Ling said: "After a couple of defeats this was a massive victory for us. It's a pleasing result, that's for sure.
"We matched Crawley's physical energy and passing and Rene Howe proved a real battering ram up front on his own but he also played with skill."
The victory, however, came at a cost as winger Danny Stevens was stretchered off with an ankle injury.
Ling added: "There is a possibility that Danny may have a break. It may be a ligament problem and he could be out for weeks, rather than days. We'll know more after he's had a scan."
