Mukendi: Simpson still keen

Sky Bet

Gary Simpson says Vinny Mukendi still has a future at Macclesfield despite the striker being sent back to Southport this season.

Mukendi, 19, scored twice in six starts with the Blue Square Bet Premier outfit earlier in the campaign, but had no goals and a red card to his name in eight subsequent appearances for the Silkmen before returning to Haig Avenue last month.

"He had a good spell there, did really well and they wanted to keep him," Simpson said. "But we brought him back and put him straight back in our team and he did okay.

"He picked an ankle injury up and was out all over Christmas. He started training again and, to be fair to the kid, he lost what he'd gained by going so we thought it would be beneficial for him to go out and get another month of games in.

"At the end of the day I just want the boy to go out there and enjoy it. He scored on his return (in a 3-3 draw against Luton).

"He needs to get some games in again, that's why he's gone out - to help his future. He's 6ft 5ins, he's quick, he's got an eye for goal - he just needs to get stronger and apply himself a little bit better. He's still only 19 years of age."
