Assistant boss Mark Grew says Port Vale's priority should be winning points at home rather than impressing with their performances.
Vale's promotion push has been hampered by their form at Vale Park, where they have won five and lost six of their 13 matches.
The Burslem club are just four points adrift of a play-off place, despite losing four matches in a row before a 1-0 win at Rotherham last weekend.
Ahead of the visit of improving Plymouth on Saturday, Grew told the club's official website: "We can't afford to go out thinking we can entertain our home fans and then lose.
"We've got to battle and grind a result out. If we do that and win 1-0 on Saturday, everyone will go home happy.
"You saw the fans at Rotherham. There weren't many there and it wasn't a pretty game, but they went home very, very happy and that's what we've got to do at Vale Park."
