Johnson hopes to bag deal

Striker Oli Johnson has been given a chance to impress Carlisle, where he could soon sign a permanent deal after a good trial run.

The 24-year-old had his contract with Norwich cancelled by mutual consent on January 9 after making just four starts in two years as Paul Lambert's side secured back-to-back promotions. Cumbrians boss Greg Abbott was hoping to assess Johnson in a friendly against Doncaster on Tuesday, but the game was called off due to a frozen pitch. Johnson - who admitted he was attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Barnsley - told the Wakefield Express: "It has gone well at Carlisle and they seem pretty happy with me. "I am just waiting to see if they are going to offer me a deal and I am hopeful that I might find out by the end of the week. "Barnsley had a chat with me. I think they saw me as a future prospect but I am hoping to get a chance of first-team football in the near future."
