Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner admitted the 1-0 League Two defeat to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday was hard to take.
Chris Zebroski's first-half strike decided the game and the loss leaves the Shrews outside of the automatic promotion places after Port Vale snatched a last-gasp win to leapfrog them.
"I'm still trying to work out how we lost, having had so much possession," Turner said.
"In some ways it was our own fault. We didn't work their goalkeeper enough for all the good play up to their box.
"We can take heart from the fact that we played well and passed the ball into good areas.
"But we didn't make the most of our possession and that is something to work on."
