Paul Peschisolido is scouring the market for a centre-back due to Burton's defensive injury crisis.
Nathan Stanton requires an operation on his knee, putting him out for months, while on-loan centre-half Tom Parkes suffered a broken ankle in the club's last match against Port Vale.
Ryan Austin, Tony James and veteran club skipper Darren Moore are all available to Peschisolido but Moore's fitness issues leave Burton vulnerable.
"A few days ago I had five centre-halves and I was thinking how strong we looked in that department," Peschisolido told the Burton Mail. "Now we're down to three and two of those aren't what you would call regulars.
"I've really got to pull out all the stops to see if I can get someone in as soon as possible because one more injury or suspension and we'll be in trouble.
"We need cover in the short-term but, looking at the injuries to Stanton and Parkes, I think I've also got to look at a permanent signing."
