Simon Whaley is on the comeback trail after a spell out of the game through injury and is bidding to earn a contract with Doncaster Rovers.
The former Norwich and Preston winger joins Sean O'Driscoll's squad this week to allow the Doncaster coaching staff to assess his fitness with the possibility of a contract at the end of it.
Whaley started last season at Norwich City after a summer move from Championship side Preston North End that commanded a £250,000 fee.
However, following Bryan Gunn's departure he did not see much action under new boss Paul Lambert.
A successful two-month loan spell at Rochdale in September was followed by a similar stay at Bradford City before joining Chesterfield after his contract was mutually cancelled at Norwich.
Whaley told
skysports.com: "The last couple of months of last season I was struggling with my knee. I didn't think it was too serious until I started pre-season when it went. It was successfully operated on in July and since then I've been working with a specialist who gave me the all clear to train."
Whaley has had to do all the rehabilitation himself since the operation, but after getting the green light from his medical people he is hoping to get a contract as soon as possible and sees Doncaster as the ideal place.
"It was a hard slog at times but I always knew I'd be back. It's the first time I've not had a club so it was a little strange.
"Doncaster are known for their attractive attacking football style and Sean was kind enough to invite me over for the week. Now I know my knee is fixed I just want to get playing again."
