Darlington defender desperate to resolve deal dispute

Steve Foster is eager to resolve his contract dispute with Darlington and aid the Quakers' desperate fight against relegation. The experienced defender was stripped of the captaincy and told he would not be considered for selection again by manager Steve Staunton after refusing to waive a clause in his contract. Foster, one of only two senior players to stay with the club after they were plunged into administration last season, is entitled to a one-year extension deal if he makes 20 appearances this season. After reaching 18 outings in the 4-0 home defeat by Morecambe on 24th November, Foster was informed by Staunton and chairman Raj Singh that he would not feature unless he dropped his right to a new deal as the club could not afford the financial outlay. Former Bristol Rovers, Doncaster and Scunthorpe centre-back Foster is the cash-strapped club's highest paid player, despite reducing his wages in the summer, and there has been speculation he could be set to move in January.

Frustrating

With Darlington plummeting towards relegation with just eight points from their opening 21 games and a yawning 14-point gap to safety, the 35-year-old simply wants to play his part to improve their increasingly perilous position. Foster told the Northern Echo: "At the beginning of the season I renegotiated my terms to accept a wage cut and, in turn, they agreed that if I played 20 games, it would assure me of another season on my deal. "I'd already played 18 times when they made it clear they would no longer consider me for selection and gave the captaincy to Ian Miller. "It's very frustrating because all I want to do is help us in the very difficult situation we find ourselves in. "I want to get together to sort things out and get back onto the field."
