Stanley defender punished after breaching betting rules
Accrington Stanley defender Peter Cavanagh has been banned from football for eight months and fined £3,500 for betting on a game against Bury.
Cavanagh was charged by the Football Association in April for breaching rules on betting in relation to Accrington's match against Bury on 3rd May 2008.
He has now been found guilty of the charges and his punishment from the FA's regulatory commission will take effect immediately.
Regulatory commission chairman Nicholas Stewart QC made the following statement: "These were repeated deliberate breaches of the Football Association's betting rules which are vital to maintain confidence in the integrity of the game.
"These are serious offences by a club captain and therefore must be punished by a substantial period of suspension of eight months together with a fine of £3,500."
Last month, James Harris, David Mannix and Robert Williams, all then Accrington players, and former Bury forward Andrew Mangan were found guilty of the same charges.
Harris was banned for one year and fined £5,000 by the commission as a result of his offences.
Mannix received a 10-month ban and a fine of £4,000, while Williams was given an eight-month suspension and a monetary punishment of £3,500.
Mangan was banned for five months and fined £2,000 for betting on Bury to win.
