Macclesfield chairman Mike Rance wants striker Gareth Evans to stay at the club amid interest from Lincoln.
The out-of-contract player is wanted by the Imps but as he is under 24 years of age Macclesfield are entitled to a compensation fee.
But Lincoln do not want to pay this fee and Rance hopes the striker will instead stay to play an important role with the Silkmen next term.
He told the club's official website: "Lincoln are not willing to meet this condition and we don't think it appropriate for us to forego our right in this respect.
"We would really like Gareth to stay with us as an important part of our new strike force and benefit from the improvements we are putting in place over the summer."
