Grimsby Town boss Alan Buckley is still keen on Michael Boulding, but is also in talks to sign another striker.
Boulding is expected to leave Mansfield Town after the club's relegation from the Football League and has been linked with several League Two clubs.
Lincoln City and Rotherham United are showing an interest, while Grimsby are trying to bring the forward back for a third spell at Blundell Park.
There has been no progress on any deal for Boulding recently, leading Mariners chief Buckley to size up another option.
"I'm hoping to speak to a player and we'll see what comes of it," Buckley told the Grimsby Telegraph.
"It may be a bit more drawn out than the others as he is still at a club, but I'm not sure they want to keep him. I'll just talk to him about the football side of things and see where we go from there.
"As for Michael [Boulding] - nothing is dead with that. We know what he can do but, at the moment, I have a different type of striker to speak to."
