Shrewsbury have climbed to 11th in League Two following a 1-0 win over lowly Wrexham.
Wrexham had the first chance of the game, but Matty Collins screwed his shot wide after bursting into the box.
The home side continued to create the better opportunities, although Neil Roberts fired over following good work by Chris Llewellyn.
Shrewsbury weathered the storm and came into their own in the second half when Symes broke the deadlock on the stroke of the hour mark.
Symes beat the offside trap before slotting the ball between Anthony Williams' legs for the only goal of the game.
Wrexham finished the stronger with Marc Williams testing Shrews keeper Glyn Garner from close-range, but they could not find a leveller.
