Sheffield Wednesday have been hit with news that defender Joe Mattock faces six weeks out with ankle ligament damage.

The 24-year-old left-back sustained the injury in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Charlton and had to leave the pitch on a stretcher, with scans confirming the extent of the problem.

Boss Stuart Gray said after Tuesday's 2-0 loss to Bournemouth: "Joe is out for around six weeks. He went over on his ankle and the frustrating thing is, it wasn't a proper tackle.

"He caught his studs in the turf and his body weight went over on the ankle. We wish him well and a quick recovery.

"The good thing is we have players who can fill in and I thought Jeremy Helan did well on Tuesday, particularly in the second half."

The news comes as a blow to the Owls, who are woefully misfiring in the Championship at the minute.

Gray's men have not won in eight games, scoring just once in the last four, and they welcome South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham to Hillsborough on Saturday.
