Chesterfield are keeping their feet firmly on the ground after a hat-trick from Eoin Doyle set up a 4-1 thrashing of Scunthorpe.

Assistant boss Leam Richardson made it clear the team would not get carried away after victory lifted them to fourth in League One. Scunthorpe had started well and scored 30 seconds into the second half when Paddy Madden fired in from 10 yards. But Chesterfield roared back even though Doyle missed a 51st-minute penalty after Miguel Llera had handled. But Doyle's confidence was unaffected and he swept home debutant Sam Clucas's cross in the 55th minute before Daniel Johnson sent him through in the 64th minute. Doyle made no mistake from the spot a second time when he was tripped by Niall Canavan in the 73rd minute and Sam Morsy wrapped up a great second half for the home side with a strike from the edge of the box in the 89th minute. Richardson said: "It's very early and we won't get carried away. "We don't get down when we get beat and we don't get too adventurous when he win. "It's a tough league and you can go a long time without picking up points so we'll keep our heads down. "The first half was a bit flat but we said we wanted to move the ball a bit quicker and be more positive with our passing. "The goal woke us up and from then on I thought we were fantastic. "Eoin is a confident lad, he scores goals and he made up for it (the penalty miss) by going to take the next one to finish with a hat-trick and we're all made up for him." Scunthorpe manager Russ Wilcox admitted his side has a lot of work to do after they collapsed in the second half. "We played some outstanding football, moved the ball well and got our noses in front but then we crumbled," Wilcox said. "There were poor decisions at the back for all the goals and we can't defend like that and expect to win games. "They put us under pressure and we couldn't deal with that. "I've looked at the goals and they were basic errors you can't make at any level. "We are very, very disappointed. We were hoping we had turned a corner, but some of our defending was shocking."
