Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner has confirmed the club have turned down a bid for Liam Cooper from Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United.
Reports had indicated Leeds were interested in the 22-year-old defender, who helped the Spireites to a 2-2 draw with the Whites in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
Chesterfield have now revealed Leeds' bid was an "undisclosed six-figure offer which failed to meet the club's asking price."
Turner told the club's official website: "We have turned down an initial bid which was below our valuation of Liam and we now await a response from Leeds.
"I'm not surprised that there has been interest in Liam because he is a quality player. Paul Cook has assembled a squad of players who are capable of playing in League One and above and it would be a surprise if none of them attracted interest from other clubs."
Cooper joined Chesterfield from Hull in January 2013 after an initial loan spell and the Scot has played 79 times in total, including 48 appearances last season as he helped them win the Sky Bet League Two title.
