Jones relishing fresh start

Daniel Jones is relishing the prospect of getting on with his career after leaving Port Vale and signing for Chesterfield.

Jones was sacked by the Valiants a month ago following a training ground incident which left team-mate Doug Loft with broken bones in his nose, jaw and cheek. An internal investigation conducted by Vale led to the left-back having the remaining year of his contract cancelled, thus making him a free agent for any club who wanted to sign him this summer. According to reports, a handful of League One clubs were interested in Jones but Chesterfield have won the race for his signature. After signing a two-year deal with the League Two champions, the 27-year-old told the club's official website: "I'm really delighted to have joined Chesterfield because it's a very ambitious club. "It's a very exciting time at the club following the title win and I can't wait to be involved. I know Sam Morsy very well from our time together at Port Vale and he had nothing but rave reviews about the club. I'm ready to get on with my career now." Jones, who can also operate on the left side of midfield, began his career at Wolves and had several spells out on loan before joining Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2010. After making 37 appearances for the Owls, he signed for Vale in January 2013 and helped them win promotion to League One. Chesterfield boss Paul Cook said: "We feel that Daniel will prove to be a valuable addition to the squad. He has pace and likes to play football so he will suit our style."
