Sky Sports understands that Chesterfield have expressed an interest in former Port Vale defender Daniel Jones.
The 27-year-old is currently without a club after leaving Vale in April.
A training ground incident involving team-mate Doug Loft led to his departure from Vale Park.
Jones could, however, be offered a return to the Football League ranks by the newly-crowned League Two champions.
Chesterfield are starting to piece together their plans for life in the third tier, and Jones is an experienced performer at that level.
The former Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday man will be available as a free agent and Paul Cook believes he could be a useful addition to his ranks.
