Striker excited about new challenge at Chesterfield

Chesterfield new boy Marc Richards admits the club's ambition persuaded him to turn down a number of other offers to move to the b2net Stadium. Richards has signed a two-year deal at Chesterfield after seeing out his contract at League Two rivals Port Vale. A number of clubs expressed an interest in signing Richards on a free transfer, including sides from League One, but Chesterfield won the race for the 29-year-old. Richards has admitted he turned down other offers to make the move to Chesterfield having been impressed by John Sheridan's vision for the club.

Ambitions

"Chesterfield's long-term ambitions were one of the main factors behind my decision to make the move," Richards told skysports.com. "Chesterfield are a good club who are looking to build on recent successes having won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and also promotion the season before that. "John Sheridan is a good manager and I think his style of football is suited to my type of play. "They play attacking, entertaining football and I hope to score lots of goals for Chesterfield. "They want to win promotion back to League One next season and the manager sees me as a piece in the jigsaw puzzle to fire them back to League One and I'm hungry to help them do this. "There was lots of interest from other clubs, but after meeting the manager, the staff and having a look around the stadium I came to the conclusion to come to Chesterfield. I felt really welcome. "I just felt it was the right move and I needed a change. I feel Chesterfield ticks all the boxes."
Wrench to leave
The move ends Richards' five-year spell at Port Vale and he admits it was a massive wrench to leave the club. "It was possibly the biggest decision of my career and it was a split decision between staying at Port Vale and moving to Chesterfield, but in the end I decided to join Chesterfield," added Richards. "I have had five seasons at Port Vale and there has been lots of ups and downs . "It has been a long journey and it is something I will never forget and Port Vale will remain a club close to my heart."
