Richards keeps eye on the prize

Captain Marc Richards insists he will put his future to one side to concentrate on firing Port Vale to League Two promotion.

The 29-year-old striker is the club's leading marksman this season having scored eight times, but his future at Vale Park is uncertain with his contract due to expire this summer. Speaking to The Sentinel, Richards said: "I've never been one to talk about contracts during the season, I've always left it until the end of the campaign. "We had a meeting with the manager last week. Every game is a cup final and not just because the club wants to get into the play-offs and get promoted. "I'm out of contract in the summer, so I need to be playing as well as possible to put myself in the shop window if Vale don't offer me anything. "It's a hard situation but, as players, the only thing we can affect is what we do on the pitch. The season doesn't end for four months and anything could happen off the field in that time."
