Chesterfield's leading scorer Jack Lester did not break his ankle during Saturday's win at Milton Keynes Dons.
Lester was stretchered off midway through the second half following a tackle from Danny Swailes and was taken to hospital.
The Spireites feared the striker had suffered a broken ankle in the challenge, but X-rays have shown that is not the case.
The ankle is still badly bruised, but the League Two club are also hopeful there is no serious ligament or tendon damage.
"This is good news from what we first feared, but it is still too early to predict how long he will need for a full recovery," Chesterfield boss Liam Richardson told the club's official website.
Lester has been in brilliant form since moving to Saltergate in the summer, scoring 15 goals in 18 appearances for the club.
