Spireites bring in Hughes

Mark Hughes marked his loan debut for Chesterfield with a goal against Gillingham.

Mark Hughes marked his loan debut for Chesterfield with a goal against Gillingham.

The midfielder was signed by The Spireites from Conference South outfit Thurrock to provide emergency cover.

He started Saturday's League One clash at Gillingham and put Roy McFarland's men in front before the hosts scored twice in injury time.

McFarland explained his reasons for adding the 23-year-old to his squad after Mark Allott compounded the club's injury concerns.

"We have an increasing number of fixtures and only a small squad to play with, so we are always looking for opportunities to strengthen the squad," McFarland told the club's official website.

"We have looked at Mark recently and we have liked what we have seen."

Hughes joined Thurrock in the summer after being released by Oldham Athletic and will look to impress during his spell at Saltergate.
