Australian defender Aaron Downes has been rewarded with a short term deal at Chesterfield after impressing Spireites boss Roy McFarland.

Downes, who operates as a central defender, has been given a chance to earn a longer deal after shining in the club's pre-season.

McFarland will monitor Downes' progress over the next three months, before deciding if the player is worth snaring on a permanent basis.

''Aaron is only 19-years-old and clearly has some ability,'' said McFarland.

''We want to take a closer look at what he has to offer over the next three months, with the possibility that the contract could be extended.''
