German delivers for Taylor

Peter Taylor praised Antonio German after he came off the bench to score a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Bradford.

German, who joined Gillingham from Brentford in the summer of 2013, has struggled to make his mark at the Priestfield Stadium. He went out on loan to League Two club Northampton last season and has made only three starts this time round. But the 22-year-old scrambled the ball over the goalline when the Bradford defence failed to deal with Brennan Dickenson's right-wing corner. Former Bradford boss Taylor said: "We see him in training every day and we see a good centre forward. "Sometimes he doesn't produce, but when he does produce he is a good player." Taylor, who used all three substitutes, added: "We went for a bit more height and strength after going a goal down. "We could have gone for Luke Norris or Danny Kedwell, but we went for Antonio German and he scored the goal. "This will give the players confidence we can score from set-pieces. "I was pleased with the first-half performance, but we were not very good in the second half and we certainly made mistakes leading up to the Bradford goal. "We had to change our shape after going a goal down. The boys worked extremely hard and deserved the goal." Gillingham are still without an away win - they have picked up only three points from nine away matches - but Taylor said: "I am pleased with our togetherness although we need to do better in the final third." Bradford's had the better of a goalless first half, their best chance falling to substitute midfielder Billy Knott in the 34th minute when his goalbound shot from Jon Stead's cross was turned on to the post by goalkeeper Stuart Nelson. The Bantams deservedly went in front in the 56th minute thanks to an own goal from visitors' defender Leon Legge. On loan midfielder Andy Halliday took advantage of a slip by Kortney Hause and cut in from the right before trying a curling shot which Legge turned into his own net as he attempted to clear. The home side almost scored a second after 77 minutes. Billy Clarke provided an opening for substitute James Hanson, whose shot beat the advancing Nelson, but struck the post. Gillingham, who created few chances, rallied in the last 10 minutes and were rewarded in the third minute of stoppage time when Dickenson's right-wing corner was headed back across goal by Legge and German scrambled the ball over the line. Frustrated Bradford manager Phil Parkinson said: "We have dominated the game and a second goal would have killed off the game. "We had the chances to kill the game off, but we didn't take them. If you don't take your chances you are always susceptible to a killer punch. "I should be going into the dressing room and telling the lads how well they played, but the equalising goal changes the mood. "It is frustrating. They won the header from the corner, we haven't reacted to the second phase and that has proved costly."
