Sky Sports understands that James Meredith has turned down the offer of a new contract at Sky Bet League 1 side Bradford City.

The 26-year-old defender has spent the last two seasons at Valley Parade and has been a first-team regular throughout his stay.

He is, however, ready to take on a new challenge.

A number of clubs in the second and third tiers are believed to be closely monitoring his situation.

They will now be ready to pounce, with Meredith set to drop into the free agent pool.

He would likely jump at the chance to step up into the Championship were a suitable offer to be tabled, with his career to date having been spent in the lower reaches of the Football League and in the non-league ranks.
