Whites youngster will sign improved Elland Road contract

Jonathan Howson has agreed a new long-term deal with Leeds, while Scunthorpe are interested in Tomi Ameobi. The Whites youngster was already on a lengthy contract at Elland Road, but the club were keen to reward him with improved terms after breaking into the first-team last season. Howson has agreed a deal that will keep him at Leeds until 2011, although there is a provision to automatically extend that a further 12 months if the club win promotion to the Championship. "We're all delighted," manager Gary McAllister told the club's official website. "He's a player who has come through the Academy and is a local lad which is a big plus. "He has a lot of potential and a lot of ammunition to develop his game and I'm pleased I've got the opportunity to help his development."
Second swoop
Meanwhile, Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins, who tried to sign Jermaine Beckford from Leeds last summer, wants to try another swoop this time around. Adkins had youngster Ameobi at Glanford Park on loan last term and was impressed enough to try and do a deal with The Whites should the striker reject their contract offer. "He's got a bright future in the game," Adkins told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "He's 19 years of age, he's 6ft 2in and he's a raw talent. "I've tried to bring him to the club. Leeds have offered him a contract, but I can't see him figuring in their team. "First and foremost we'd have to do a deal with Leeds, and likewise we'd have to make sure there's a position for the player to fill."
