Barnsley manager Simon Davey believes defender Lewin Nyatanga has a future in the Premier League.

Defender returns to Derby, while Atkinson extends Grimsby stay

Barnsley manager Simon Davey believes defender Lewin Nyatanga has a future in the Premier League after an impressive loan spell at Oakwell. Nyatanga has returned to parent club Derby after a six-month stay with Barnsley in which he clocked up 27 appearances. And boss Davey believes the 19-year-old has a bright future with the Rams as they fight for their top-flight status. "It is unfortunate but Lewin will go back to Derby County now," Davey told Barnsley's official website.

Talent

"We will send him back there with our best wishes. Lewin has been fantastic for us this season and a great servant during his six months here. "Hopefully he will go on and prove what a talent he is by doing well in the Premier League." Barnsley have also allowed Rob Atkinson's loan spell at Grimsby to be extended by a further month. Atkinson scored his first goal for the Mariners at Chester on New Year's Day and Grimsby boss Alan Buckley is delighted to be able to keep hold of the defender.
Delight
"I spoke to Simon Davey, Rob's happy to stay and we're happy to have him," Buckley told Grimsby's official website. "Rob has played a part in our recent wins and we are delighted to keep him." Meanwhile, three other players have left Oakwell as defender Thomas Harban and forward Nathan Joynes have completed permanent moves to Halifax and on-loan German full-back Dominik Werling has returned to Turkish side Sakaryaspor. Harban and Joynes were products of Barnsley's academy, but they both failed to make an impact in the first team and have now joined Halifax in the Blue Square Premier. Werling made 19 first-team appearances for Barnsley this season, but his six-month loan has now expired and Davey has opted not to extend the deal. Paul Heckingbottom, though, could fill the void left by Werling's departure as he returns from a loan spell at Bradford, but the full-back could go back to Valley Parade later in January.
