Watford secured promotion to the Premier League as Middlesbrough and Norwich suffered late blows to their hopes of top-two finishes.
The Hornets maintained top spot and moved four points clear with a 2-0 victory at Brighton in the early kick-off, before seeing the Canaries' 10 men held to a 1-1 draw at Rotherham, while Boro lost 4-3 at Fulham.
Bournemouth can now effectively secure promotion when they host Bolton on Monday night due to their vastly superior goal difference to Aitor Karanka's third-placed men, with a victory sending them three points clear.
The Millers could have secured their survival with three points, but will now have to win either their game in hand against Reading on Wednesday to prevent the relegation battle from going down to the final day of the season.
Steve Evans' men were deducted three points earlier in the week for fielding an ineligible player but have stated their intent to appeal the decision.
* Watford are promoted to the Premier League
It will be a straight battle between Preston and MK Dons on the final day to join champions Bristol City in securing automatic promotion.
Preston killed off Swindon's vague hopes of securing a top-three finish with a 3-0 victory, while the Dons' 3-1 win at seventh-placed Rochdale secured play-off places for Sheffield United and Chesterfield.
The final three relegation places will also be decided next Sunday with Coventry, Crewe, Notts County, Crawley, Leyton Orient and Colchester all still in danger.
* Sheffield United and Chesterfield secure play-off places
Sky Bet's promotion odds: Preston 1/3, MK Dons 4/6, Sheffield Utd 9/4, Swindon 3/1, Chesterfield 4/1
Hartlepool secured Football League survival as they beat Exeter, with Cheltenham and Tranmere - after a 94-year stay in the Football League - condemned to relegation after defeats to Shrewsbury and Plymouth Argyle respectively.
Barnet will take one of those vacated spots after winning the Conference, while Bristol Rovers, Grimsby, Eastleigh and Forest Green will battle it out in the play-offs.
The Shrews secured their widely-anticipated promotion to League 1 with their 1-0 win at Whaddon Road, leaving it down to Southend, Bury and Wycombe to battle it out for the third automatic promotion place.
Luton's play-off hopes were all but mathematically ended as defeat left them three points behind seventh-placed Plymouth with a vastly inferior goal difference.
* Shrewsbury secure promotion to Sky Bet League 1
* Cheltenham and Tranmere suffer relegation from the Football League
