Mark Yates admitted his Cheltenham side had been in a battle after the Robins claimed a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon.
Marlon Pack and Kaid Mohamed gave Town a 2-0 lead and, despite a late Byron Harrison effort, the Robins held on to move up to third in npower League Two.
"I thought we started really well for half an hour. Once we scored, they came back a bit and we had to defend a little bit more than we'd like to," said Yates.
"Second half we were disappointed that we didn't put the game to bed really. After our goal they came back again and we got a scare at the end with their goal, and almost another one after that.
"But we thoroughly deserved the win, Scott Brown deserved a clean sheet - he made an outstanding reaction save in the second half from Jack Midson.
"The whole defence were fantastic. It's been well-documented that I wanted a defender, but I never had a problem with the players we've got. They put in a great shift."
