Liverani moves quickly on

Fabio Liverani was convinced Leyton Orient created enough chances to win their relegation six-pointer following a 1-1 draw at Crewe.

Chris Dagnall blazed over when it seemed easier to score and Darius Henderson fell over with the goal at his mercy as the Londoners dominated the second-half but had to settle for a point at Gresty Road. "I am pleased with the performance as the players showed great spirit," said Liverani. "I'm disappointed we didn't get three points as we created many chances. "We'll take it step-by-step now. We're out of the relegation zone with five teams behind us, so we'll take it game-by-game. "The game would have been different had it not been for the wind. "But we had enough chances in the second half to have won the game. "We have got an important game now against Doncaster on Tuesday night." Crewe were the better side early on and Ryan Colclough, making his first start in 18 months, cut in from the right flank to drive an effort at goalkeeper Alex Cisak. The Railwaymen took a 10th-minute lead when Greg Leigh broke clear down the left and delivered a hard, low cross which Cisak was unable to hold. Lauri Dalla Valle was on hand prod home from close range. Jobi McAnuff was offered the chance to level soon after as a loose ball dropped invitingly into his path, but the veteran winger volleyed well wide from 15 yards out. But Henderson made no mistake on the half-hour mark when he edged ahead of his marker to volley in Marvin Bartley's deep cross from the right by-line. Crewe goalkeeper Paul Rachubka kept the Londoners at bay after the break with a string of saves. Yet Dagnall should have done better with a gilt-edged opening in the 70th-minute after he had been put in the clear by Ryan Hedges. Striker Dagnall's blast was finger-tipped over Rachubka, but he had time to compose himself with only the keeper to beat. Ryan Colclough forced a save out of Cisak, but it was largely one-way traffic with Rachubka denying Hedges as Orient swarmed forward in the closing stages with chances falling for McAnuff and Henderson. While Crewe stay in the bottom four, their manager Steve Davis was not disconsolate and believes his side may have earned a vital point. "The players worked tremendously hard for what could prove to be a very important point," said Davis. "Orient shouldn't be where they are. They're a much better team than their league position suggests. "We played really well in the first half, but the wind was a large factor in the game. "We were under pressure in the second half, but we got some great blocks in and the keeper made some good saves. "Losing the two midfield boys (Jamie Ness and Chris Atkinson) to injuries affected what we could do. "We were playing with 10 men with Jamie for a bit. But in the end we worked hard to get a point."
