Liverani has plenty to ponder

Fabio Liverani took charge of Leyton Orient for the first time but he suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Peterborough.

The Italian, whose previous managerial experience was limited to a seven-match spell in charge of Genoa last season before he was sacked, joined the O's earlier in the week on a two-and-a-half year contract to become the club's fourth manager this season. The defeat sent Orient into the drop zone while their opponents were able to celebrate their first win in eight league matches, although they finished with10 men after Joe Newell collected a second yellow card deep into added time. Posh had taken the lead though former Orient striker Aaron McLean but the home side, with only one home league win this season, levelled through former Peterborough striker Shaun Batt before half-time. But Posh restoted their advantage with a delightful free-kick from Erhun Oztumer two minutes after the interval and were seldom troubled. Their most anxious moment came in the fifth minute of time added on when a goalmouth scramble saw a shot cleared off the goal-line but the visitors proved good value for their win. Speaking through an interpreter, Liverani admitted that the style of the game did not surprise him on his introduction to English football. "It was physical ad there were a lot of one against ones, which didn't surprise me at all and I was expecting that sort of physical approach to the game." he said. "We have eight players injured and one suspended so it is difficult for me at this moment to say where any strengths and weaknesses lie in the squad. "Once I have the full squad available, I'll be able to make a true assessment. But I saw many positive aspects from the game, we conceded very little and they scored form two minor distractions. "I think that we deserved a draw, so yes have a lot of positive feedback from the game. "I don't have any specific concerns about the team's performance, but I do have concerns about the league table. "Obviously it is not great because we are third from bottom but I believe the squad has the ability to come away from that situation. "We'll see after the next few games and once all the injured players are back whether we need to strengthen the team or not." Meanwhile, Posh manager Darren Ferguson praised his side for their attitude that ended a barren recent spell. "It was a great win for us because this is always a tough place to come and it took two really good goals for us to win the game," he said. "I thought that it was a really good performance and the boys deserved their victory. "We showed a lot of character, it was a long time to hold on to the lead but we saw it out well. "I did feel that on one or two occasions on the breakaway, we could have done a little bit better and finished the game off, but I saw a team out there that was really determined to get the right result. "So that was pleasing and I'm really pleased for the players that they got the result. "Harry Beautyman had a really pleasing debut, showed good energy and he's come in and done really well and has deserved his chance in the team. He played his part in the first goal and can be satisfied with his performance. "I've been really impressed by him and he's been a good signing. Erhun Oztumer also had a good game and scored a terrific goal with his free-kick and that's something he's got in his locker. "He's probably been a bit unlucky that he hasn't made as many starts as he might have done because of the formations we've played."
