Sean Clohessy has set his sights on automatic promotion next season after signing a new contract with Southend.

The right-back put pen to paper on a 12-month extension to his previous deal with the Shrimpers on Wednesday after being an ever-present for Paul Sturrock's side this season. And the former Gillingham man is confident the Essex club are capable of challenging for a return to League One next season. He told the club's official website: "Last season we were a new side and ended up 13th, which was still successful, but we will do better next year and have to be aiming for promotion. "We know each other inside out now, we know how people like to play and that's a huge help. It will make a big difference and we weren't too far away from the top seven last season either. "Our home form at the start wasn't the best and neither was our away form at the end and that cost us, but next year we have to be going for automatic promotion."
