Clinical Wycombe back on top

Clinical finishing proved the difference as Wycombe beat Leyton Orient 4-2.

Clinical finishing proved the difference as Wycombe beat Leyton Orient 4-2 on Thursday night.

The Chairboys were in lethal shooting form as they returned to the top of League Two courtesy of goals from Charlie Griffin, Matt Bloomfield and Stefan Oakes (pictured), while Lee Steele and Shane Tudor both registered for The O's.

Griffin opened the scoring after just over a minute when he capitalised following Orient's failure to deal with a Kevin Betsy shot. The ball rebounded to the onrushing former Forest Green marksman who slotted home from just inside the area.

Despite the early blow, the visitors stuck with their effective brand of counter-attacking football and were rewarded after twenty minutes when Steele stabbed the ball home from six yards after Frank Talia had parried a shot from the impressive Tudor.

Parity was to be short-lived, however, as Wycombe wasted no time in pushing their noses back in front. Gabriel Zakuani found himself under pressure 18 yards out and could only watch in dismay as his header looped goalwards past a despairing Glyn Garner.

And Wanderers' lead was extended in the 49th minute when Bloomfield side-footed home from the edge of the area after being tee-ed up by former Watford star Tommy Mooney.

Five minutes later, Oakes weighed in with his first ever goal for The Chairboys. In his 17th league appearance for the club, the ex-Leicester City trainee hammered home from 25 yards after Russell Martin had rolled a free-kick into his path.

With the scoreline threatening to flatter Wycombe, Tudor restored some credibility to proceedings when he toe-poked the ball home after Garner had forced out a header from Zakuani.

The visitors refused to accept defeat in the closing stages, however, with the livewire Tudor posing a constant threat as they threw men forward in a desperate, yet ultimately fruitless attempt to salvage something from their trip to Buckinghamshire.
