The Newcastle loanee has had to play second fiddle to the in-form Craig Noone on the left wing during the opening weeks of the season.
But manager Gus Poyet said LuaLua has reacted superbly in training and will be hard to leave out for much longer.
Poyet told The Argus: "Everybody at the club and in this city loves Kazenga LuaLua. So do I, but Craig Noone is on fire so he is playing.
"I have never seen Kazenga train like he did last week. It was unbelievable. Kazenga has come here to play and now he is thinking he needs to do a little bit more."
Poyet is optimistic striker Craig Mackail-Smith will be fit for the weekend despite pulling out of the Scotland squad with a back injury.
