The £3.25million striker did not know much about the first-half strike which sealed a 1-0 win at Portsmouth after the ball rebounded off him into the net.
But Poyet said: "Craig deserved that. The amount of work he put in is unbelievable and he makes it so difficult for all the defenders he plays against.
"He didn't score in pre-season but now the season has started he's scored in the second league game. It doesn't take long for people to start asking when the goals are going to come, and it came.
"That will give him confidence and it helped the team. I'm pleased for him."
