Huddersfield manager Chris Powell will not stand in the way of first-team coach Steve Thompson should he choose to become assistant manager at Leeds.

Leeds head coach Neil Redfearn has been looking for an assistant since being appointed as permanent replacement for Darko Milanic at Elland Road on November 1.

Redfearn and Thompson played alongside each other at Bolton in the early 1980s and remain good friends and although the Leeds boss has not mentioned any names, it is an open secret that the Huddersfield coach is his preferred choice.

"Well Steve is still here, he hasn't gone anywhere yet so let's get that right," Powell told a press conference ahead of his side's derby clash with Sheffield Wednesday at the John Smith's Stadium.

"He's part of my coaching staff and I'd like him to remain here.

"I understand, and it's been floated around for the last few weeks, I know Neil knows Steve very well and he's looking for someone.

"So if we add it up, that maybe something that could happen.

"I haven't spoken to Neil and I'd like Steve to stay, but equally I've been in the position before, if that comes up there's a possibility of him going.

"I'm sure he may want to talk to them and then it will be his decision."

Thompson arrived at Huddersfield in June under former boss Mark Robins after spending 10 years as coach at Blackpool and currently shares first-team head coach duties with Steve Eyre.
