Midfielder could snub North East duo to stay at Barnsley

Sky Sports understands Barnsley midfielder Jacob Butterfield is considering making a U-turn and signing a new deal with the club, snubbing North East duo Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. The 22-year-old missed most of last season with a serious knee injury, but he is now nearing full fitness and is considering his options. Butterfield, who was called into the England Under 21 squad last season, is out of contract at Oakwell and had looked set to depart the Championship club. Newcastle were leading the chase to land him and North East rivals Middlesbrough were also keen, but now the player is considering staying put. It is believed Butterfield has been impressed by manager Keith Hill's plans for the new season, which have seen him pull of a significant coup with the signing of Egyptian striker Mido.
