Winger hoping to catch McCarthy's eye in cup clash

Wolves winger Adam Hammill is determined to prove a point against Millwall in Tuesday's Carling Cup third round tie. The former Liverpool man was an unused substitute in the 3-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers at the weekend, but impressed during the Premier League outfit's 4-0 win at Northampton in the previous round of the cup. The competition has received a lot of criticism in recent weeks, with Hoops manager Neil Warnock and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy outspoken in their views, but Hammill believes it is a great platform for fringe players to perform on. "It is a chance for players that aren't in the first-team to prove that they should be playing and show the fans what they can do," he told skysports.com.

Competition

"The players that haven't been involved as much as they'd have liked in the league games will want to use the Millwall game to remind the gaffer that they are ready to step up to the plate when called upon. "The squad has been strengthened again in the summer and I think that there are two or three players that are competing for every position on the pitch, which is great. "It is good for competition and keeps everyone on their toes, which can only be healthy for the club. "It does mean that a lot of players will have to miss out from time to time, but at the same time those players are fully behind the lads that are playing to win games."
