Winger joins up with squad for pre-season trip to Malta

Fulham winger Julian Gray has joined Sheffield United on trial, while goalkeeper Ian Bennett has signed a new deal with the club. The 29-year-old will join the Blades squad for their pre-season trip to Malta next week eager to impress manager Kevin Blackwell. Having made his name at Crystal Palace as a youngster Gray enjoyed three years at Birmingham before making his switch to Craven Cottage in summer 2009 after an initial season on loan. First team opportunities were hard to come by last term with the former Coventry ace making just two substitute appearances in all competitions. Gray was so dismayed by his lack of first team football that he reportedly spurned the offer of a new deal to stay with the Cottagers as he aims to make the Blades the seventh club of his career. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bennett has penned a new one-year contract with the club albeit with extra responsibility. The 37-year-old will join the Blades' coaching staff as of next season as well as continuing his playing duties. "He has agreed a one-year extension to his contract and started his coaching path now," Blackwell told the club's official website. "So in edition to being number two he will be working very closely with our goalkeepers in the development squad."
