Gray rethinks Southport move

Accrington's joint-top scorer James Gray has performed a U-turn and rejected the chance to move to Southport on loan.

It was revealed on Thursday that the recent Northern Ireland call-up, who has not scored since September, would be linking up with the Vanarama Conference outfit for the remainder of the campaign. However, having trained with his new team-mates on Thursday afternoon, the striker had a change of heart and elected to remain with John Coleman's men. Explaining Gray's decision, Southport manager Paul Carden told his club's official website: "James attended training on Thursday with us. But, after agreeing on the loan and shaking hands on it, James contacted me raising doubts about the move. "Therefore it is best James stays at Accrington where he currently isn't featuring. "I would like to thank John Coleman for his support in this matter but I can't take a player who has doubts about playing in the Vanarama Conference. I move on with our squad development." Gray had earlier taken to Twitter to put forward his own side of the story. He said: "Just like to say I haven't joined southport on loan , i want to stay and fight for my place at @ASFCofficial ! Wish @southport-fc the best!"
