Guttridge: Job only half done

Luke Guttridge remains disappointed Northampton missed out on automatic promotion as the League Two prepare for the play-off final.

Having fought off relegation to finish 20th last season, the Cobblers ended this campaign in sixth spot and are on the brink of promotion ahead of Saturday's Wembley showdown with Bradford. While Guttridge accepts the club have come a long way in the past 12 months, the 31-year-old insists manager Aidy Boothroyd and his players have not done what they set out to achieve at the beginning of the season. "The goal from the very first day of pre-season training was to get promoted to League One," said Guttridge, whose superb goal at Cheltenham nine days ago gave the Cobblers a 2-0 aggregate win in the semi-finals. "When you look at where we finished last season some teams might see getting to Wembley as a massive achievement, but we are disappointed not to have finished in the top three and been promoted automatically. For us, it is a job half-done. "Don't get me wrong, this is an achievement in terms of where the club has been over the past couple of seasons. I have been saying for a long time that Northampton should not be down where they have been. "But talk is cheap. Now we have to go out and do it on the pitch. And if we do go up at Wembley, then that will be special for the fans - and the players."
