Iron boss hoping for Reid boost

Scunthorpe skipper Paul Reid is hoping to shake off another injury setback in time for this weekend's game at Swindon.

Reid, yet to appear for the Iron this season after breaking a bone in his hand in the summer, recently returned to the substitutes' bench only to sustain a groin injury and his long-awaited comeback is now under threat due to a calf strain, which kept him out of a midweek friendly. Fellow central defender David Mirfin misses out through suspension on Saturday, leaving manager Alan Knill short at the back. "Paul went swimming on Sunday and felt his calf, so as a precaution we have decided not to risk him," Knill told the club's official website. "He didn't train on Monday. It's a shame really because we would have liked to get him out on the pitch. But as things are now he will train Thursday and Friday and hopefully be available for the weekend." On the plus side, defender Callum Kennedy could be in contention after returning from a broken toe for the last two minutes at the weekend and midfielder Michael Collins (Achilles), out of action for almost a year, will play in another friendly this week.
