Manager Aidy Boothroyd insisted Northampton are on an "upward curve" despite the 1-0 defeat at Torquay.

Mark Ellis settled the game in the Gulls' favour with his 75th-minute strike, but Boothroyd was pleased with the Cobblers' general play.

"I will take a lot of positives from the game, we created chances and played very well against a very good team," he said.

"The performances are getting better all the time but we need to get results and thankfully good performances lead to results.

"We have been absolutely terrific at set plays and didn't concede anything but Torquay kept going at us and in the end we didn't deal with it.

"I am disappointed with the result but there are an awful lot of plusses to take away with it and I still believe it shows you where we were and that we are on an upward curve."
