Former Northampton defender Ashley Westwood has returned to the club on trial after leaving Kettering.
The 34-year-old, who played for Town between 2003 and 2006, left Kettering by mutual consent in January and had a brief spell with League Two rivals Crewe last season.
"He's a decent, experienced player. He's here for a month, unpaid, and we'll see how he goes. But I've liked what I've seen," Cobblers boss Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Northampton.
Westwood made just 35 appearances during his three-year spell at Sixfields because of shoulder and knee injuries.
Johnson added: "I know a little about his history when he was here before. He was unlucky with injuries.
"I say that I don't even talk to people over 30, let alone sign them, but in this case he looks fit enough to be a 29-year-old."
