Shaun Harrad will miss the start of the season for Northampton after sustaining an ankle injury in training.
The 26-year-old forward, who joined in January, could miss the first four league fixtures.
The setback has sped up manager Gary Johnson's plans to acquire a new striker.
He told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo: "Shaun will be out for two or three weeks because it was quite a nasty one so that leaves us a bit short there.
"We'll have a little look around and see what there is out there.
"As a manager I have to keep looking and we've got a few forwards that haven't hit their form yet. I'm hoping they don't leave it too long."
