Northampton boss Gary Johnson says no decision has been made about who will captain the team this season.
Defender and namesake John Johnson took the armband for Wednesday's friendly against Forest, but the manager believes it is important every player leads by example.
"To be honest, nobody said anything and he [John Johnson] picked the armband up and came out," Johnson told the Herald & Post.
"So he obviously wants it and I didn't have the heart to tell him that we hadn't picked anybody yet.
"If he wants it that much and puts in performances like that then he has got every chance. I need them all talking and I thought they were busy, noisy and they were giving good information.
"The armband is something that someone puts on, but really you need everybody talking and giving information. It's not a massive thing to me who wears the armband because I want them all to be captains."
